Esther has lived most of her life in the shadow of the Wasatch Front, growing up in Provo, Utah and three years ago re-locating to Salt Lake City. Her love for the beautiful mountains and deserts of Utah inspired her to study Earth Science at Utah Valley University and she is now pursuing a career in geology. This path has taken her: camping throughout rural Nevada, up-close and personal with the Wasatch Fault Zone, chasing toads in the high mountains, volunteering for red rock canyon country protection, and most recently landslide hunting in Northern California. Along the way she picked up kayaking and skiing and many good friends.
Travis comes from the tiny New England town of Orange, Massachusetts, where he loved fishing and working on classic Volkswagen Bugs. After graduating from camping college in 1999 (Outdoor Leadership Program, Greenfield Community College) he began traveling across America working as a raft guide, an at-risk teen trip leader and ski instructor. It was his love of skiing that brought Travis to Salt Lake City in 2001/2002 winter, inspired by the Olympics. For the next 9 years he returned to Utah and Brighton for each winter season. Travis also began developing an online business in 2007 revolving first around selling cars on eBay, and later consulting with people interested in eBay and internet marketing.
In the summer of 2010 Travis followed Esther to Northern California, changing for the first time his habit of migrating home to New England for the summer. They both took up surfing and enjoyed hiking in the redwoods. Travis is very excited to continue in life’s adventures with Esther, here in Salt Lake City where the couple plan to settle down, at least for the winter season.
How We Met
Yes, Esther and Travis met on Craigslist. Travis responded to Esther’s personal-ad, “ISO LTPP (in search of long term paddling partner), Must also enjoy camping and good conversation, besides kayaking.” Soon after they discovered Esther had just finished taking the telemark series at Brighton Ski Resort, while Travis had just finished teaching the telemark series. Their paths didn’t cross at the resort (Esther was a never-ever skier, and Travis was teaching intermediate to advanced), but they went on their first date a little more than two weeks later, the day after Valentines Day in 2008. Esther got her long term boating partner, and maybe next time they’ll go out on Valentines Day.
